Do's and don'ts in health checkups

Health checkups are important. They can help you find problems even before they start. By taking the right step towards a better health checkup, screenings and treatments, you will be able to get a proper diagnosis and live a longer, healthier life.

Preparing for a health checkup? Have a look at what are the do’s and don'ts when it comes to health checkups.

DO’S

  • Make sure you have not eaten anything at least for 8 hours before your checkup. While some tests require an 8 hours gap, some require around 12 hours. Consult with your physician to avoid any mishappenings.
  • Try to get a good sleep. There are several studies that indicate a lack of sleep's effect on our blood pressure levels, which can cause unnecessary irritation and stress. These will affect other tests as well.
  • If you have been scheduled an ultrasound scan, make sure you drink several glasses of water before the scan as a full bladder creates a convenient path for the ultrasonic waves in the scan.
  • Proper dresses that are both comfortable and appropriate are a must during a health checkup. In case of a treadmill test, wear appropriate footwear and attire that allow you to take the test comfortably.
  • There are some particular medicines that should be taken prior to some tests. Make sure you get to know about them with the help of your physician.

DON’T’S

  • Avoid the risk of booking a master health checkup without consulting your physician. You might be expected to follow some specific instructions before your health checkup.
  • Avoid consuming foods that have excessive salt, sugar, and laxative substances as these can either trigger and elevate your results or make you feel uncomfortable.
  • Exercise or strenuous, physical activities are a big no before a health checkup as these can raise your blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Avoid heavy food and caffeinated drinks/ alcohol.
  • Avoid wearing/ usage of perfumes, deodorants, talcum powders, creams, lotions, ointments, etc., as these can interfere with your test results.
