Every 29th of September is celebrated as World Heart Day, to stress the importance of heart health and spread awareness about the same. Owing to the increasing stress and competition, heart diseases are unavoidable. But, heart diseases are easily detected and preventable.

To beat heart issues, you should be on top of your heart health game. Here’s a list of tips on what to do and what not to do to keep your heart health at the top.

DO’S FOR HEART HEALTH

Start some physical activity: Researches have shown that exercise reduces the secretion of stress hormones, which proves to be good for your heart. Exercising regularly proves to be beneficial for your heart in many ways. It decreases the amount of adrenaline that circulates throughout the body and also relaxes your blood vessels, which results in a lower pulse rate and blood pressure.

Eat Better: A healthy, balanced diet is an ideal diet to ensure good heart health. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, consume whole grains, drink ample water, and eat healthy fats each day. Always remember to include healthy proteins in your diet.

Manage stress: Many studies in the past have linked anger and stress to the inception of heart diseases. The best way to decrease the risks of heart diseases is by learning to manage stress. Stress can be managed by doing daily yoga, pranayama, meditation, etc.

Maintain a good posture: Lazing around, lying idle on the bed, working on the fancies of our bed, especially during the lockdown time has surely affected our mental health too. As much as we enjoy sitting relaxed while working, it takes a toll on our mental health. Maintaining good postures ensures a positive mental attitude that provides one with a balanced state of mind and a happy healthy heart.

DON'TS FOR HEART HEALTH

Smoking: There’s no doubt about the fact that smoking is the number 1 contributor to heart diseases, putting them at a risk of cancer and heart attack. Active as well as passive smokers are equally at risk of health-related issues.

High Blood Pressure: With the growing competition and stress, hypertension is unavoidable. Hypertension may cause wear and tear on the blood vessels, damaging the arteries and kidneys. The key is to learn to manage your stress.

Sitting for long periods: Recent research has shown that sitting for long periods can be bad for your health, no matter how much you work out. This may come as bad news for all those professionals who have sedentary jobs all day long. Doctors suggest that it is important to move throughout the day. Take shorter walks throughout the day, and remember to exercise on most of the days.

Obesity: Obesity usually puts strain on the body, joints, and blood vessels, which in turn puts stress on the heart. Losing some pounds may have a good impact on one’s heart health, even if it’s a few kilos.

Controlling your frustration and depression: Reports suggest that bottling up one’s frustration and depression may have dire consequences on one’s mental health which may have bad effects on your heart too. Try to talk to a doctor, or discuss with a family member, and open up about your depression. Take help and win over depression for your heart health.
